Our Righteous Actions Are Not Enough

What stuck with me yesterday has to do with Titus 3:5 -- that we are saved "not because of righteous things we have done." Here's a typical way that we relate to God. We do something bad and then think we have to make things good. The idea is that we know that our bad actions condemn us and we think that our own righteous actions might make God pleased. But this is not true -- not even our righteous acts will save us. What we thought might get us some negotiating room with God won't work! Sounds scary! But there's more to the story. Check out Titus 3:1-8.

While in Malaysia a couple weeks ago I had an extended discussion with a Hindu co-worker.  Works righteousness plays a significant role in their religion.  Balance the good with the bad and you'll have a decent afterlife until you are reincarnated into something better.  Combine that with the "all paths lead to god" philosophy, and it's a difficult witness encounter!

It's a terrible realization when you know bad you have been, and in our own immature  faith and desperation we think we can make it up, instead of just being up front and honest with God and asking for His forgiveness, and then set our course to do better as we go, and even better when  we ask Him to help us do that because we recognize that we can't do it alone.

Yes. Sometimes I get discouraged when I realize I still try to play games with God. As though he didn't know me better than I know myself!

That's why I like Lamentations 3:22-23.  His compassions are new every morning; they never fail.  Thank goodness I don't have to rely on my works to get to Heaven.  In light of that, Jesus death on the cross is soooo much more meaningful!
