Discerning the New Birth

So how do we know if we are reborn as we discussed in Titus 3:4-8 (or if your child is reborn)? Here are some clear evidences of rebirth from 1 John 5:1; 3:9; 2:29; 4:7; 5:3-4.

  1. Do I believe in Jesus as my Savior and Lord presently and continuously? 1 John 5:1: "Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ, has been born of God."
  2. Am I turning from sin and pursuing what is right? 1 John 5:4: "Everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world." 1 John 3:9: "He cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God." 1 John 2:29: "Everyone who practices righteousness has been born of Him."
  3. Do I love God and love people. 1 John 4:7: "Let us love one another for everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God."

This, of course, is an issue of utmost importance so I urge you to reflect on these truths. Additionally, parents who are thinking about believer's baptism for their children will be helped by the questions above.

Your thoughts?

I've been enjoying the sermon series, but I think that rebirth starts when a person makes the decision to accept Christ, not when he is prompted to do so. We had quite the discussion about this in our ABF.
